If you are a fan of the glossies like myself, you know how annoying it can be when every magazine reports on the same old thing. I have run into this conundrum rather frequently these past few months. Thus began my exploration through a sea of splashy covers and redundant tag lines for something a little different. Here is what I have found:
Launched in March of 2013, Printed Pages is an art and design magazine from the publishing group It’s Nice That. The most recent issue released in Spring 2014, shows stunning graphic photographs and illustrations alongside interviews and stories. Printed Pages collaborates with other creative minds such as Rookie’s Editor-In-Chief Tavi Gevinson.
A fashion magazine launched in in 2010 that focuses on stylists and photographers about to make it big. Intermission is based out of Stockholm, New York, and Paris which helps the independent mag reach a broader audience. Fashion Director Brian Molloy told the New York Times “It’s less about naming all of the trends and more about distilling a certain mood at its core.”
The best way to describe AnOther is that its like that girl in high school who dressed way too trendy but was so cool you kind of wanted to be her. Then that girl went on to design school, now works at some cool fashion house, has all these trendy friends and is still WAY too cool for you. Launched in 2001, AnOther’s cover has featured celebs like Jessica Chastain and Katie Holmes and includes fun interviews with 80s icon Molly Ringwald.
Based out of NYC, Bullett has the best cover photos I have ever seen for a magazine! The old saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” does not apply to Bullett. Blake Lively, Daniel Radcliffe and Elizabeth Olsen have all been featured on the cover. Something even cooler…no ads! According to The Cut, “Bullett is a ‘transmedia’ company, which apparently means it doesn’t need ads to survive.”
Of all the fashion closets that I want to raid, Hunger Magazine’s is probably number one. The tagline on their facebook fanpage is “For the culturally and visually hungry,” and they do not leave you going to bed with an empty stomach in this jam packed magazine. Cover stars have included Iggy Azalea, Daniel Craig and James McEvoy. The most recent issue paid homage to everything British which included articles on up and coming British actors and articles showcasing Chanel’s latest beauty collections.
