In Defense of Avril…

The angst filled teen from Canada that I loved so much as a middle schooler has grown up. Although many of us would not think so based on this video. At first view I cringed for almost the whole video. It looked like a horrible copycat of Katy Perry’s California Girls music video. However, look a little deeper and this video is marketing genius. Why? Pop in countries like Japan and South Korea is HUGE and Avril is currently more popular there than it is in the US and Canada. She is appealing to an ever changing audience and while some will say that is her selling out (which I agree with) but she is still relevant to a large audience after all these years. That being said I don’t think that this video shows how vocally talented she is (I’m With You was my angsty teenage anthem) and honestly the video was not something I would want to see ever again. But I get it. Her audience in Japan and South Korea would relate to this type of music and music video a lot more than most viewers in the USA. But please Avril…showcase those pipes a bit more.
